Community update September 18, 2025:
The new collective agreement between the Dalhousie University Board of Governors and the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) has been ratified by both parties.
All King’s and Dalhousie classes will resume as of September 23, including the previously suspended King’s classes listed below.

To all in our King’s community,
September has brought the renewed energy of academic life again to campus, but without the full participation of all our students.
We appreciate the circumstances of the past two weeks have been challenging for everyone, particularly students.
With our colleagues at Dalhousie University and the Dalhousie Faculty Association navigating contract negotiations, we began the fall term aiming to provide as much clarity for decision-making by our students as possible. The close association between King’s and Dalhousie results in a large number of Dalhousie students being taught in classes at King’s. In addition, King’s students take many Dalhousie classes.
Our protocol during this work stoppage has supported the delivery of classes at King’s open only to King’s students. During this time, we have been re-evaluating the situation as it has evolved.
We are announcing a resumption of most teaching at King’s, which would include both King’s and Dalhousie students in our classes.
All suspended classes at King’s will resume on Monday, September 15, 2025, EXCEPT FOR:
· HSTC 3302/BIOL 3602 History of Biology, which is taught by a member of the Dalhousie Faculty Association
· Classes taught by the six Carnegie professors, who occupy a joint appointment at both King’s and Dalhousie, and who teach and work primarily at Dalhousie. Those classes are in:
o CLAS 3515 Greek Tragedy (R. Barker)
o CLAS 2011Latin Lit. in Translation (P. O’Brien)
o CLAS 4821 Latin Texts: Human and Divine (P. O’Brien)
o CLAS 5037 Adv. Latin Sem: Human & Divine (P. O’Brien)
o ENGL 3031 19th Cent Fict: Austen-Dickens (R. Maitzen)
o FILM 3601 Scriptwriting 1 (R. Barker)
o HIST 2325 US Black History to 1865 (H. Whitfield)
o THEA 3515 Greek Tragedy (R. Barker)
o THEA 3601 Scriptwriting 1 (R. Barker)
We have made this decision in consideration of the best interests of our students as circumstances have evolved.
No King’s faculty are members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association. The vast majority are not unionized. A small number of Faculty Fellows and Senior Fellows at King’s have their own union.
As always, we remain hopeful labour negotiations involving our colleagues at Dalhousie will be resolved in the near future.
In addition, King’s students and parents are advised that the student accounts fall term due date for tuition and fees, including residence, will be 10 instruction days after suspended Dalhousie classes resume.
